the autumn leaves are turning red and yellow and are are lovely sight we have had two more calves born no help needed and that is usual for the Blondes the cows are in good nick having enjoyed a lot of grass due to there being great summer rains which were most welcome so suggest the sub soil layer will be wet .The 60 odd ducks that spend the summer with us to have their chicks are now all leaving for their winter habitat but the rabbits deer and wombats are staying sadly as the deer herd is now 20 odd and they love our paddocks that have grass indeed the top paddock they keep well denuded but if that is the worst we experience all will be well buy a horse and cart and beat the petrol price .
Time has passed and we are into autumn the leaves are turning and cooler weather is almost here and I am happy about that, the Blondes are all going well with quite a few calves on the ground we put a black Angus bull over a few of the cows but the calves do not compare with the pure blonde prodigy as they don’t have the superior muscle tone of the Blondes so I don’t think we will bother doing that again .We have a cow that had twins and she decided that she would look after only one so rather than tying the two together we have bottle fed the calf she has rejected and happily she now is taking grain so my Mothering role has ceased.Feeding out is well established and that is a cost but we wont have hungry cattle, they were all drenched in January so that keeps the grubs controlled. we are having a group AI soon with a Canadian bull as we want an out cross strain so hope that goes well. One of our bulls is going interstate so all is good. Last year we had an influx of dung beetles which arrived when the fires were on so suggest that they flew away to safety which was a great idea as far as I am concerned as I was on the brink of buying some, but strangely we have a lot of shell back snails around which we have never had before so where they hail from I don’t know the mushrooms are starting to poke through a sure sign of Autumn KEEP YOUR DISTANCE FROM OTHERS AND ONLY BREATHE OUT
summer came and went and now the biggest storm we have experienced in years, I went to Ferny Creek today and it is devastation- power lines down for kilometres and total tree wrecking everywhere very bad, the only ones enjoying it are those that are carting away the free fire wood and the fellows doing the wood chipping they will be busy for months . we have sold all our R heifers and will grow the bulls on for a bit longer. the next drop is due September. The breeders are all happy as they a big shed where they can shelter if thy choose but mostly don’t bother, not a lot of grass about so have to feed out but that is a Winter job every year DON’T CATCH COVID AND BE KIND TO YOUR MOTHER
cold cold is the operative word and mud mud but as always we will get through. The blondes have got heavy coats on and the girls are showing that they are in calf but hope they hold on as it is too cold for babies The virus is vicious but good comes out of everything so just hold on! There are good prices at the sale yard so happily for farmers they are enjoying a high price for their animals and a lot of the drought areas getting rain so in the gloom there are a few nice things happening .Spring is just around the corner and I will be happy to see some warmer weather with regular rain over the summer sure I want it all, but if we don’t put our order in anything can happen stay warm and safe
june 18 2020
There are 4 very nice young heifers for sale They are around 16 months old Should be joined this month of June They are quiet and sound cattle Give Drew a call for information 0419 133 988 SOLD however young good bulls are available
This month of June is very cold no snow here as yet but plenty of rain, the cattle are all on introduced feed so they are going well most of the breeders are due to drop in September but we don’t have calving problems so expect a steady run, there is a bit of green pic so all is great. The wombats have very big burrows and we don’t see them in the day so they are OK it is only when they are unwell that they come out in the day time, the ducks are coming back and mating up so ducklings will be around in Spring .
I have been really slack with news , early in the year we ran out of feed as the grass had dried off and the grower from whom we buy hay had gone overseas for a holiday and left a message on his phone to advise any callers, that he would be back soon sadly, in moved the thieves and took 300 bales of hay from his shed and of coarse away went our hay and as it had been a very slow year for growth we were unable to buy any replacements, we sold off some very nice bulls homozygous and polled boys and a lot of older cows to ease the strain, but we are back to normal now with heifers for sale that are due to be joined this month of June the weather has been very cold but I am very happy with the rain so no complaints from me and the cattle have been drenched and have very heavy coats on. we did some AI with a Simy bull and there is a beautiful black heifer in the paddock and she is quiet as a mouse so it will be interesting where we go from here keep safe and don’t catch the virus.
10/12/2019 HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND MAY 2020 BE A STUNNING YEAR FOR YOU AND YOURS
At last we have some grass 20-40 cm long and the cattle are very happy as mentioned in last item we have young bulls and heifers growing away very nicely and the heifers that are a N year will be joined this month to the homozygous polled bull as they are of good stature and looking great.Rain has been good with heavy showers on a regular basis so this sure takes the pressure off and the Yarra Valley is showing good cropping of the various green crops that have been grown for hay and silage. We have young bulls that are powering along all whom have been sired by a homozygous polled bull and I have to say that he is looking magnificent as we were watching the other day he was standing on the road shepherding the girls over and insisting that they walked on past him and up the bank and walk this way not over there please and amazingly they all did as they were asked. Well it is almost Christmas so the holidays will start and the happy season will be upon us all the cows have calved and we did not have to help one the little ones are very frisky and alert WE WISH YOU THE BEST FOR A GREAT BLONDE YEAR
Rain came in May and was most welcome June was not a wet month however that is the usual weather pattern but some very cold times were experienced the Blondes are marvelous they will go into the sheds if they can but don’t walk around winging. The local farmers are being very careful with the sheds that house the hay that is for sale as the thieves are alive and active.the grower that we had our squares ordered with lost 320 units-this threw us into a spin as we could not source any hay to replace the stolen ones so sold off some very good homozygous polled bulls at auction disappointing but we have just weaned off our next crop of heifers and bulls so off we go again our problems are nowhere as bad as the people up North who have had years of drought only to be flooded out by storms they sure are doing it tough
The paddocks have been very dry but a couple of light showers have resulted in a bit of green appearing and the Blondes are very happy about that we have sold off a lot of the older animals and that leaves us with only 15 month old bulls and younger heifers but they are all in good condition so we have some nice stock ready to go, hope your Easter was a nice break and your dams are full because ours are not 1/4/2019 we had a heavy downpour resulting in 50 ml of rain and that is a real blessing the paddocks are starting to green up and we have just got the results from the soil samples that we submitted so will get the recommended product onto the paddocks as we are firm believers in having the ground correctly balanced as the result is healthy pasture growing healthy animals.
Southern Blonde Region: A general meeting of the Blonde region was held at our farm at Castella 3/2/2019 there were nine members present and we welcomed new members Jason and Colleen who recently bought five heifers from us and a bull from Ron it was a good meeting where a decision was taken to ask the Blonde central committee to invest in promotion of the Society much time was spent on the Lardner presentation with members indicating that they would make animals available for display which is an important opportunity for farmers to see just how good the Blondes are the next meeting will be held at Lardner Saturday 4pm at the area that the Blondes are on display.
BEEF WEEK 2019
It was a lovely day weather was perfect,we wish those who bought a bull all the best with their new boy and we are always available with advice or help that we can offer
NOVEMBER 2018 REPORT
WE HAVE HOMOZYGOUS POLLED BULLS FOR SALE AVAILABLE NOW- OUR UPCOMING BEEF WEEK IS DAY TWO 27/1/2019 FOUR BOYS THAT ARE GREAT BULLS AROUND 2 YEARS OF AGE AND 2 YOUNGER LADS ALL ARE QUIET AND GOOD STRUCTURE Also available are three polled bulls around 18 months all the animals have been well screened for temperament and structure and the plan has always been to acquire good stud bulls from other breeders to broaden the blood lines to enhance our stock and our motto buy quality and success will follow is where we stand .
It has been a fair season weather wise but once again very cold with snow falls and grass does not grow in those conditions so have churned through a power of rounds and squares. The Spring calving went without a hitch as we were not called upon once to assist any cow that was calving so that is a bonus however it is very rare that we have to help as the Blonde calves are born long and slender and muscle up very quickly. we imported some semen from Canada and there are four calves resulting from that venture the bulls are going to be very nice and that is a plus as we wanted an out cross for the joining of the cows in future in addition there were two heifers so we will see how it goes. WE WELCOME YOU TO FARM TO HAVE A LOOK DREW IS THERE MOST DAYS LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU GIVE US A CALL 0419133988 0409357136 should you have any questions
1/6/2018 The two 11 month homozygous bulls are booming along so if you have preference for the younger bulls these two are worth a look both Elite Neil and Noah have muscled up strongly and display a quiet attitude both are sired by Rupari Kasper d’poll who was a very correct bull with great feet but we lost him to snake bite.
2/4/2018 our resident black snake has been spotted again and the estimate of its length almost 3 meters I saw it two years ago and estimated it to be two meters plus so it is getting plenty of food- somebody said the big snakes are not as big a worry as the small ones as the cattle can see them it is the little ones that are the trouble.but no doubt it will be creating plenty of babies.
23/3/2018 hopefully the rain is not far away as our paddocks are very dry but today we got some showers so that hopefully is the beginning of the autumn break we have some nice stock ready for sale so come on down and have a look
Beef Week was a great success and we thank all who called in and those that bought animals from us
Beef week is almost upon us with our day Saturday 3/2/2018 and there are some top animals available -we have 2 homozygous polled bulls for sale as well as ptic polled and de horned heifers young commercial bulls also available we welcome you to call at the farm.
The 2017 spring calves are on the ground with no assistance being needed- one set of twins and all the calves have been tagged noting that every one is polled so the homozygous polled bull is doing a great job.The weather is very stormy and 30 degree days are upon us but the calves carry on and are not affected by the extreme conditions that they have to face! the grass is growing lovely so that is a plus . The calves from the autumn drop are powering along and there are some real stand out animals among them using the more recent bulls has resulted in a top quality group of animals .
we are well on the way to being able to supply homozygous polled cattle as we have some very nice calves on the ground that have to be tested [ of course] we put the tested girl Linda in with the homozygous bull last month so it will be interesting to see the results so far there are around 15 calves that may meet the homozygous criteria- we used a canadian bull over some of the girls as we want to be able to widen the gene pool and according to paper reports the horned animals are out of favour.
the Winter has set in with very cold wind and rain the cattle have all got their overcoats on and are holding up well- we are feeding out in a big way but what is new- Lilly and Klipper sold this month The client that bought the heifer Lilly has another of our girls who was joined to an Angus bull and it is black and a lovely – first calver so that is a great result.
THERE IS A VERY GOOD FACE BOOK ENTRY FEATURING WAYNE HESS HE EXPLAINS THE MONITORY VALUE OF USING BLONDE GENETICS USE THIS LINK AND HAVE A LOOK AS IT IS FEATURING VERY VALUABLE INFORMATION IF YOU ARE TRYING TO IMPROVE YOUR BOTTOM LINE
Recently we sold a young bull Elite Lord to Avenel and I contacted her to see how he was going the following is her reply and in addition she very kindly offered to speak to you should you wish to do so regarding her experience with the bull
“Lord is absolutely perfect. If one did not know better, you would think he has lived his whole life on the farm. He follows his ladies, is learning very quickly his purpose in life. He is quiet and placid around me when I am moving the herd – just like his predecessor Matrix. I could not be happier with him. Thank you.
I will be putting him out into the house paddock next week with a couple of old cows so that I do not have too drawn out a calving pattern. He will get to enjoy the fallen fruit from the old pear and apple trees as long as he can beat my flock of wooly wombats (sheep) to them. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing his offspring in September”.
Thank you to all the people who visited us on beef week Sunday the weather was hot but all was good if you should need to come back or those that will visit for the 1st time you don’t need to wait for beef week as we are always around the farm so give us a call you are always welcome 0419133988 and there are some good cattle available
we are inviting you all to the farm 2900 Melba Highway Castella for Beef Week our day is day 3 January 29 we have had a nice drop of bulls and heifers that will be around 16 months available there are 3 very nice bulls included in the drop of 12 that are a stand out already so we will be keeping a very close eye on them. The 12 heifers are muscling nicely and they are lovely and quiet they are keen to get the bread treats as soon as they see my vehicle. The cape weed has been a picture in the valley this Spring due to the wet Winter it has sprung up all over- we have been busy eradicating it but it wont be defeated very easily We had our first snake sunning itself last week so must be aware from now on as the weather gets warmer. The calves that are being born right now are all delivering without help and they will be happy with some warmer days if you need to contact us 0419133988 we have taken delivery of homozygous bull Rupari Lassister d’pol also this February we are using imported semen from a homozygous bull so there is opportunity for some exciting results we look forward to seeing you anytime at the farm
Winter is over but we are experiencing very cold weather still and the rain keeps coming with the result we have been feeding out very strongly but one thing we will not have is hungry cattle, happily the herd is holding condition and the breeders are calving so far no issues with birthing so all is great we have weaned the 6 and 7 month calves and there are 3 very good bulls in the mix which may be suitable for stud purposes the balance will fill the commercial demand .Twelve heifer weaner calves are in a paddock of their own and today I checked them again and they are starting to develop a muscle pattern only 9 months at the moment but will be ready for autumn.
REPORT 17/2/2016 We have had showers that have been enough to generate new grass to grow so the cattle are very happy the new calves are growing very well there are 4 bulls ready to go around 17 months polled and horned as well as 3 very nice heifers who are carrying new blood lines different to ours that we introduced last year Rupari General d polle they are running with Elite Klancy
We will be welcoming the bull Rupari kasper into our herd this month April 2015 and as he is homozygous polled this will be the beginning of our plans to produce more polled animals, he is an excellent bull displaying choice muscling and structure and a lovely temperament so keep in touch as we are anticipating good results—.28/5/15 had him in the yards today and he is really quiet no vice in this lad.
LATER REPORT Kasper has settled in with the girls and they are all very happy, it is now really cold five degrees but all the cattle can cope endorsing the comment that Blondes are a very resilient breed as we can find them top of Australia also.
